Earl Scruggs & Friends: Concert Review Last Friday, June 19th, I rode with The Drovers Old Time Medicine Show, on a "band field trip" they called it to see the man on the 5-string, Earl Scruggs, in his hometown of Shelby, NC. While standing in line we met people from all over the USA who were there to see Earl. One such couple drove 4 1/2 hours to see the bluegrass legend. The concert was to help raise money to build an Earl Scruggs performing arts center in Shelby. Earl, who is still performing a few times a year, was accompanied by his two sons, Gary on bass and vocals, Randy on guitar, and dobro sensation Rob Ickes, Hoot Hester, fiddle player for the Grand Old Opry house band, John Randall on guitar and vocals, a young Austin Texas electric guitar picker and a drummer. What love their was in that hall for a man who helped to change modern music as much as say Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Bob Wills, Bob Dylan.....anybody. One of the many highlights of the show was when they performed Dylan's "You Ain't Going Nowhere", which Earl and his sons have been performing since the Earl Scruggs Revue days of the late 1960's. when Earl joined in singing on the last chorus I was grinning so hard my face hurt! Of course there were a few flubs here and there, the man is 85 years old after all, but who cares?! Just the fact that the man is still out there picking is enough, but he played really well. And when it came time to play "Foggy Mountain Breakdown", well I can honestly say I'll remember that the rest of my life, X-Concert Review Back in 1981, while the Los Angeles hardcore punk scene was taking shape, a guitarist who was a rockabilly gunslinger, and who had played in an aging Gene Vincent's, started a band that was going to be heavily influenced by The Ramones but have musical chops. That band was X and they released some of the greatest and most influential albums of the 1980's. The band's female lead singer was named Exene Cervenka and the rest of the band assumed comical, fictional names: John Doe on bass guitar and co-lead vocals, DJ Bonebrake on drums and the older guy who had started the band on lead guitar, Billy Zoom. Zoom left the band right before the 1985 "Ain't Love Grand Tour". I saw that tour, and the whole audience was surprised, that Dave Alvin from The Blasters was on lead guitar and not Billy. I then saw them a couple of times on the "See How We Are" tour with Tony Gilykson on guitar. So I was really pumped up to see the original four. Especially since it was announced the week of the Atlanta show that Exene had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It may have been the last chance to see them, and they had an online Total Request Live where you could go to the city on the tour schedule you were to attend and vote for the songs you wanted them to play.
