Messy Divorce Case Divides Town

Divorce Party photoPrater’s Creek, SC is usually a peaceful little town, with a divorce rate of one per decade. But this town is torn apart over the divorce proceedings between Dwayne Harris and his, soon to be ex, wife Teresa.

Things were going fine in court, and the case was headed toward an amicable ending, until the property was being divided up between the two. There were no arguments over who gets what until the couple’s Blue Tick hound, Smoky, was discussed. Dwayne and Peggy both refused to give into the demands of the other and give up ownership of the dog. The judge presiding over the case, the Honorable William Simpson, noted that both had wanted a dog and had picked it out at the jockey lot one Saturday morning.

Public opinion here in town has been divided along gender lines with all the men saying Dwayne should get Smoky and the women saying Peggy should. “Dog is man’s best friend” Ed Price told the Gazette, “not woman’s”. But Marlene Price said “That dog was around Peggy more than he was Dwayne. That dog kept her company all them times Dwayne was gone deer hunting and fishing, or out honky tonkin’!”

Judge Simpson said he would deliver a ruling tomorrow morning.

Snake Handling Church To Hold Revival

Snake Handling photoThe Prater’s Creek Nondenominational Snake Handling Church will hold an old-fashioned tent revival August 18-25. The revival will be conducted by the Reverend Thomas Hill who promises “ lots of old time preachin’, prayin’, singin’, shoutin’”.  “We’re going to save some souls and bring Jesus into the folk’s hearts” Rev. Hill told the Gazette.

This is the first revival held by the church in five years. “We got a court order saying we could hold the revival again,” Rev. Hill said. “The ban on snake handling has been appealed and our lawyer got the judge to let us hold our revival pending the outcome of the appeal”.

Although Rev. Hill has assisted many times in holding the revival, this is the first time he is conducting it. The former head preacher, Rev. Mark Spalding, died five years ago during the last tent revival the church held.

Reverend Spalding’s death was shrouded in mystery, but Rev. Hill cleared up the issue. When asked what did kill the Rev. Spalding, Rev. Hill replied “Snakebite”.

Paris Hilton photoHeiress To Do Community Service

Infamous spoiled rotten heiress, opener of new clubs, and star of reality television, Paris Hilton, will do community service in Prater’s Creek. Hilton was convicted of violating her probation she was under as a result of drunken driving. Hilton will be picking up trash along Terrapin Crossing and Belle Shoals Road this Tuesday and Wednesday if you’d like to come out and heckle her.

Jenny Heart Anniversary Sale

Jenny Heart photoJenny Heart, proprietor of Jenny’s Dress Shoppe, says she can’t believe it was five years ago when she opened her store. “It seems just like yesterday we were having our Grand Opening sale!” Ms. Heart said with amazement.

Since Ms. Heart opened her dress store, the women of Prater’s Creek are dressing, as one loyal customer told The Gazette, “like we’s right outta the Sears and Roebuck catalog!”

Ms. Heart, always on the cutting edge of fashion, says she even has the new Capri pants in stock. “Why, I saw all of them girls over at Clemson College wearing them breeches that didn’t go all the way down their leg” Ms Heart explained, “and I got out my peeking sheers and went to work. They been selling like hot cakes!”

Volunteer Fire Dept. To Hold Hog Jowls and Grits Dinner

The Prater’s Creek Volunteer Fire Department will hold a hog jowls and grits dinner this Friday night at the fire station on Stewart Gin Road. Plates will be $6 for adults and $4 for children under twelve.

All proceeds will be going towards the purchase of a new fire truck. When asked how much money has been raised for the truck so far, Chief Flint McCalister said “Well, we had a good bit raised but we spent it all on a bass boat, er I mean a fire rescue boat”.

Chief McCalister also said his band, Flint and The Flat Tops would perform after the dinner.
