Polecats Kick Off Season

Nothing means Fall in the South like the return of high school football. The 2005 Prater’s Creek Polecats celebrated the start of the new season with a big pep rally and then more importantly, two victories to start the season.

FootballThe Polecats opened the season with a game against the SC School for the Incontinent and Grumpy. On the day before the game, the whole town turned out for a big pep rally. The Drovers Old Time Medicine Show performed two football themed songs, “The Johnny Unitas Song” and “Never Die Easy”, off of their latest CD and coach Dave “Killer” Keller gave a speech about “taking the schedule one game at a time” and “kicking the *#@%*@# outta of ever team on the schedule!” Also, Spring Thomas was named the head cheerleader for the season at the pep rally.

The next night the Polecats crushed SCIG 54-3.

Week two proved to be more of a challenge as the Polecats traveled over to Central to visit local rivals, the Daniel High Lions. Because of Hurricane Katrina and the resulting gouging gas prices, many upstate high schools were electing not to send their marching bands and cheerleaders to away games. Coach Keller said “ Dalvin's Dowsing CompanyI gotta hear that band playing during our games, and the boys all want the cheerleaders there”. Clovis, retired washboard player for The Drovers Old Time Medicine Show, who invented the genoobraphone, rode with the team and played John Phillips Sousa and Led Zeppelin songs on the instrument. The cheerleaders were able to pay their way to the game when newly elected head cheerleader Spring Thomas financed the 10 gallons of gas through her website project she is doing for the science fair.

The Lions were like a little helpless kitten up a tree when the mighty Polecat defense held the Daniel team to minus 5 yards of offense while Prater’s Creek racked up 61 points. Final score: Prater's Creeks 61 Daniel 0.

We Bid Goodbye to a Familiar Voice on Saturday Afternoons

MicThe sports desk here at The Gazette was saddened by the death of famed sportscaster Chris Schenkel. Schenkel called the legendary 1958 championship game between Johnny Unitas’ Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants and he was the first sportscaster to announce a coast to coast college football game on ABC. And he called the 1976 Olympics in Montreal when Nadia Comaneci scored her perfect 10. (Note to editor: Why wasn’t’ Nadia in “greatest brunettes” article?!)

Being a baby boomer who grew up a sports nut and only having three television channels to choose from, I watched a lot of ABC broadcasts with Mr. Schenkel doing the commentary. Heck, we even watched bowling, where he was the announcer, on rainy and cold days when it was to nasty to go out and play.

A Little Comment From Me and My Brother Dorris

FishingWell y’all, it’s the last days of having warm weather out on the lake. It’s nice this time of year out on the water with the leaves changing and the Autumn crispness in the air mixed with the 4-1 gas to oil mixed aroma from the outboard. Take these times to drink in the beauty of the seasons changing. Some cold day in February you’ll remember that smell and the reflection of the colored leaves on the lake’s surface.
