"The Rose Always" Bryan

Big Star Box Set: Keep An Eye On The Sky

Big Star fans rejoice! The good people at Rhino Records have remastered the original three Big Star lps plus Chris Bell's solo single and a host of unreleased gems. Disc 1 contains choice cuts from the 1st lp #1 Record including alternate mixes of "In the Street", "The India Song", and "Feel". Also there are pre-Big Star songs from both Bell and Alex Chilton. Disc 2 is basically Radio City (the 2nd lp) plus demos, alternate takes, and the gorgeous Chris Bell single "I Am the Cosmos" with the flip side "You and Your Sister" featuring Alex on backing vocals. Disc 3 is the released/unreleased 3rd lp (usually referred to as 3rd?). It contains the whole album as released on Rycodisc in the 90s plus a whole bunch of demos for the record that are primarily just Chilton on guitar/piano/vocals. And Disc 4 is a live show at Lafayette's Music Room in Memphis with Big Star as a newly reconvened trio (Chris Bell had just departed after the 1st lp shortly before this show was recorded). The sound of the live show is amazing as is the whole collection. Stand out tracks include "Try Again" early version by Chris' Rock City, "Don't Lie to Me", "September Girls", "Back of a Car" alternate version, "Blue Moon" demo, "O, Dana", "Nightime", "Holocaust" demo, and live versions of "Way Out West", "Thirteen", "There Was a Light", and "O, My Soul". Five freakin' stars!! If you or a loved one are crazy about real honest pop music ala the Beatles, go buy this now.

Thin Lizzy Still Dangerous Live at the

Tower Theatre Philadelphia 1977

Also of special note to rock-n-roll fans is the release of classic Lizzy live. This concert from 1977 is awesome from start to finish. The band flows seamlessly from song to song with occasional comments from bassist/singer Phil Lynott. Standout tracks: "Soldier of Fortune", "Cowboy Song", "The Boys Are Back in Town", "Opium Trail", & "Don't Believe a Word". This is a rich performance with the band sounding like they're having a blast while they're rocking your socks off!  The same classic lineup from the "Live and Dangerous" lp: Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson on guitars, Brian Downey on skins, and of course the inimitable ,aforementioned Mr. Lynott. #1 with a bullet in my book!
