Chasing
The Rabbit
Sometimes,
there ain’t nothin’ better to me and my brother Dorris than following our
pack of beagles as they are hot on the trail of a rabbit. Like Bill Monroe
often said, them beagles start sounding like they are singing when they are
barking and chasing after a little cottontail. A hunter develops a special
relationship with his dogs. Each hound has it’s own personality. You get to
know each one of ‘em as an individual. Monroe said he could pick out each
dog’s individual bark as they ran through the woods. Them dogs is more than
just our hounds, they are our buddies. Why, just the other day, Dorris was
saying that’s it’s like he’s got ten other brothers besides me.
They
ain’t much better on earth than to hear them hounds running a rabbit out of
the brush so that me and Dorris and can shoot that little critter. Some of
my fondest memories of my grandpa are the times he took me and Dorris rabbit
hunting. We started going when we were nine years old. He and dad also
learned us how to train the beagles.
And the rabbit is a respectable quarry too. They is smart. By the end of rabbit season they get smarter, learning tricks to
elude the dogs. They’ll back track a piece in a U-turn, then, they’ll jump
off the trail and just laugh as the hounds go barreling by, all confused.
Mmmmm! Rabbit is good eatin’ too! They is my favorite wild game. Below is my
grandma’s recipe for fried rabbit.
You’ll need a couple of rabbits, one cup of flour, and two cups of cooking
oil.
Cut them rabbits into pieces and boil ‘em in salty water for an hour. Then
drain them on paper towels. Roll ‘em in the
flour and fry ‘em up in a good cast iron skillet. By that time your biscuits
ought to be ready, and it’s suppertime!!
Prater’s
Creek Women’s
Field Hockey
Readies
for
Inaugural Season
Starting
in April, Prater’s Creek High School will have the first women’s field
hockey team in Pickens County School District history. Prater’s High
principal JC Cluggins had the idea when he was at a principal’s conference
up in Maryland. “One afternoon I was walking around the campus where the
conference was held” Cluggins explained, “and I saw these girls playing the
game. I thought they looked so nice in their starched white blouses and
little pleated skirts, and knee socks. I thought ‘Our girls would look
mighty fetching in those outfits.’” Cluggins said the first practice is
already a sellout. “I thought the women of the community would be excited”
Cluggins said, “but it’s the men folk who can’t wait!”
Great
News
for
Area Trout
Fishers
Y’all
know that the trout fishing around here gets mighty poor, especially in the
summertime when the area streams’ water temperatures get so high. Well, some
scientists have come up with a great idea over in Rocky Bottom at Reedy Cove
Creek. The waters of Lake Chilly Water feed the Creek, but, during the
summer months, the lake’s water temps are anything but "chilly". The water
temps get way over 70 degrees and most trout can only survive in water below
70 degrees.
So the State Department of
Transportation is gonna funnel the cool water in a pipe before it hits the
warm lake and send it under the lake to the creek below. This will not only
raise the trout population but will also help bring back other species of
fish and plant life as well.
