Mary Pickford Film Festival to Be HeldFilm Festival

The Bijou Theater will be holding a film festival during July celebrating the movies of Mary Pickford. Theater manager Lee Reed said, “Everybody in town has been wanting us to show a Mary Pickford film, so we decided to show a bunch of ‘em!” Pickford was known as “America’s Sweetheart” during the silent movie days. Reed said such Pickford classics as “Poor Little Rich Girl”, “Daddy Long Legs”, “Heart O’The Hills”, and “My Best Girl” will be shown as well as many one reelers.

Recipe Of The Week

TRH Construction Business AdDuring these hot months, there ain’t nothin’ better that a good 'ol banana sandwich for lunch. You’ll need some slices of loaf bread and a couple of bananas, and a jar of Dukes mayonnaise. It has to be Duke’s. Spread some mayo on two slices of bread. Next slice the bananas and put the slices on the bread. Serve with ice-cold milk and some barbecue potato chips. If you’re at the beach, or camping in the woods, a black raspberry soda goes great with this. Some days you might want to mash the banana up with the mayonnaise, some days maybe put peanut butter on one piece of bread, and other days do both. you can't go wrong with this recipe.

Local Eighth Grader Wins Poetry contest

Sam Ballenger, an eighth grader at Prater’s Creek Middle School, took first prize at the Junior High Poetry Contest held in New York City last month. Sam had written the poem as a story for an assignment in Mr. Jones’ English class. The class was to write a story on their hobby and Sam, known for his tractor noises going through the halls of the school, Livery Stable Business Ad turned in the poem. Mr. Jones gave him a failing grade on the assignment but sent in the poem to the poetry contest. Mr. Ballenger was invited to New York to recite his poem in front of a panel of literary experts. When asked about his trip, Sam had this to say, “I sure would like to drive my grandpa’s John Deere down that 5th Avenue!”

Below is Mr. Ballenger’s winning poem.
